There are many reasons why you may need to order a new phone line. For example, if you're a cable customer Virgin Media and no longer want to be with your current provider or, if you move to a new property where there is no phone connection. Choosing a phone supplier used to be easy because there was no competition - you just went to BT. But BT no longer have the monopoly, you can get a new phone line installed from a number of other suppliers like; TalkTalk, Virgin Media, and Primus.
If your're moving home within your own telephone exchange area, you may be able to keep you old number. Suppliers don't usually charge for this number transfer service, when you switch.
From ordering to operation, a new phone line usually takes about 2 weeks from most suppiers. However, set-up times can vary, depending on the availability of an engineer in your area. If the property that you are moving into already has an active phone line with a dialling tone, you may be able to keep that supplier and not pay any connection fee. Please note that not all phone providers charge the same for line rental. BT currently charge £14.60 per month, whereas other less well known suppliers like Primus only change £6.79 (exclusive Primus offer). So, don't be swayed by the setup fee, it might cost you more in the long term.
